Abstract

The diadems of Moñes belong to the outstanding Iron Age monuments of the Hispanic northwest and have been in the centre of debate for a long time. During the last years, research started attempts to interpret the depictions of the horsemen, the squires and the animals in a narrative sense. This article deals with the supposed narrative value, to negate it afterwards. It is rather a representation of a generic get-together in a comfortable atmosphere which evokes associations through vessels (eating and drinking), by birds and fish as well as by professional conduct in habit as warrior. The diadems do not own a narrative content, but a high recognition value, a confirmatory effect. They confirm the values of a martial society (aristocracy), being shared with other societies around the Mediterranean Sea as the Hallstatt culture and the La Tène culture.
